Current news and industry insights to ace your interview, attract top
talent and better understand the hiring process.

San Diego Employment Insight

What an interesting year indeed! The influencers (aka news networks), would have us believe that we are all living in chaos, only e-commerce and big box is thriving, and small business is forever doomed. Although there are bits of truth in everything, we collectively remain resilient.

Remote Interviewing and Onboarding

Remote Interviewing is stronger than I ever imagined. What was a rarity eight short months ago, is now an everyday event and Zoom/Teams calls are replacing both in-person and phone-screens. Let’s think for a moment about what that means for recruiting. Gone are the days where we must take PTO and change clothes in the car to interview. The net effect of this change is noticeable, in that the hiring process is expedited.

Candidates that are indeed ready for a change or new challenge, are now able to speak freely and we are experiencing better, more in-depth discussions. Although this is becoming our new normal, we appreciate the fluidity of the current market.

When COVID struck us all in March, remote onboarding was a bit clunky and only companies accustomed to a remote workforce understood how to properly execute such a process. We have found throughout the last few months, companies of all sizes have not only remote hired but also, remote onboarded and successfully implemented full remote working.

Home offices have flourished and even parents with young children have figured out a way to stay engaged and focused as both employees and parents. This is an exciting change and although we may return to our previous normal, many companies and employees have found success with this change and we expect to see hybrid models take place.

Employer Upside?

From an employers’ perspective, the world suddenly became much smaller. For companies truly willing to offer permanent remote working, the talent pool expands beyond San Diego and enhances the entire recruiting experience.

The bottom line, hiring is robust, and we forecast a strong hiring season into the 4th quarter. In demand talent will continue to be difficult to find and will put many employers on their heels if they expect to have a bevy of choice candidates.
